Marriage Protection Act


The Marriage Protection Act Was an attempt to amend the Federal judicial code to deny Federal courts jurisdiction to hear or decide any question pertaining to the interpretation of: the provision of the Defense of Marriage Act that provides that no State shall be required to give effect to any marriage between persons of the same sex under the laws of any other State; or this Act.<sup>1</sup>

Major Actions

One October 16th, 2003 the Marriage Protection Act was introduced to the House of Representatives. No action was taken until July 19th, 2004 when it was amended by the Committee of Judiciary. It was then pass by the House of Representatives on July 22nd, 2004 in a 233 to 194 vote. This bill still has to be voted on by the Senate.<sup>1</sup>
